Outreach

Quantum Matters

The “Quantum Matters” outreach program aims to introduce participants to the world of quantum mechanics through interactive demonstrations and inclusive discussion. We believe that a broad education in quantum mechanics is best realized via first-hand exposure to this enigmatic branch of science. This education for all is crucial as quantum technologies continue to mature and enter into society. Our hands-on demonstrations currently include the wave-particle duality of light and the concepts of superposition and entanglement. We hope to add a portable lithium magneto-optical trap to these demos in the near future (see below). This program is open to all with an emphasis on people from underrepresented minorities in STEM fields. Please contact Dan if you are interested in working together on this project.

This outreach program is made possible thanks to support from an NSF CAREER award and the University of Connecticut.

Current Work

We are currently building a portable lithium magneto-optical trap setup to take to schools, science fairs and other community engagement events. The vacuum system for this machine is now complete thanks to the hard work of Devin, Guadalupe and Pranay, three high school students hosted in the summer of 2023. We are now working on the required magnetic field coils and 671 nm laser system. Please contact Dan if you would like to work together on this setup.
